Bingo at the Movies

It draws larger audiences than the biggest box-office smashes and the top sporting events -- in fact it's the second most popular pastime in the UK and U.S .after watching television, and the proliferation of large bingo halls and websites offering online bingo continues apace. Yet, despite being able to lay claim to a larger following than any of the major movie stars, the simple but infuriatingly addictive game of Bingo has made surprisingly few appearances on the silver screen. Here are  five of the best . . .

Bingo! The Documentary (1999)
John Jeffcoat's film takes a humorous look at the world of bingo, which can claim to be America's favorite pastime next to watching television. The film looks at bingo culture in all its varieties, from giant bingo halls to bingo cruise ships and newer, more youthful bingo sub-cultures such as gay bingo and bars which encourage the customers to play bingo for drinks at the bar.

Beach Blanket Bingo (1965)
This beach party musical starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello is widely considered to be the best of a series of films starring the pair. While the title may suggest a bingo theme, don't be fooled, for this movie is primarily about a skydiving surf rescue team. However, it does feature, in the form of the title song, what could possibly be the only song in pop music history to mention the popular pastime by name!

She Toon: City of Bingo (2003)
Craig Collinson's documentary film centers around the bingo-playing women of Dundee and their contribution to the working life of the city over the past century. The film won the Edinburgh Film Festival award upon its year of release for Best Short Documentary Film.

Good Bingo (2007)
Meta Newhouse's recent documentary centers around a regular Sunday afternoon bingo club based in a community hall in Denton, Texas. The film takes a humorous yet affectionate look at the culture that has grown up around the event, from the players and the staff to the hot dogs and the big hair! Worth a look whether you're interested in attending a live bingo session or you're just looking to pick up a few tips for playing
internet bingo, as the complexities of the game are nicely summarized by a series of animations throughout the film.

Bingo! (1991)
"Batteries Not Included" director Matthew Robbins' family movie about a runaway dog called Bingo ('the coolest circus pup in town!') and his friendship with a young boy has little to do with the game of bingo as we know it. However, it may be of interest to small children, or indeed anyone who is keen to see a dog wear sunglasses, read books and perform CPR!
